Mockernut Hickory is a large native deciduous tree with a straight trunk and a rounded crown. Its thin grey bark develops furrows and flattened ridges with maturity. The compound yellow-green leaves with downy undersides turn a beautiful yellow in fall. Non-showy gendered spring catkins can give way to husked nuts, but only after the tree reaches 25 years old. Grows best in f ull sun and rich, moist well-drained soils. Generally intolerant of shade.
Carya tomentosa is a host plant for several butterfly and moth species, including the Banded Hairstreak and the Hickory Horned Devil.
